The proposed project aims to harmonise the client’s requirements for a new, innovative, sustainable and welcoming nursery school.
With a view to making the school a focal point for the community, the building extends beyond its ‘boundaries’ and opens out onto public land, blending seamlessly with the pedestrian area.
The school thus showcases its activities to the public: at both ends of the building and on the first floor, with separate access, are the three educational areas (art studio, psychomotor skills area and IT/English classroom), which can be used by the community outside school hours.
A small square in front of the entrance serves as a safe meeting place for users as they arrive and leave the facilities.
The sections are distributed evenly across the two floors: the children have the same access to the outdoors thanks to the play ramp that winds around the large trees and expands the range of outdoor educational activities.
Based on the model of the open-plan school, the interior layout expands across multiple areas: the hallway disappears, giving way to spacious, open-plan areas that can be adapted in various ways for activities with the children.
On the ground floor, beneath the double-height stairwell illuminated by the skylight, the school library is located.
Centred around an island of low, open-shelf bookcases, it features a carpeted platform with large cushions for casual reading and small-group gatherings, which is a favourite with younger children. Outside, there are a few tables with stools. Children can therefore choose for themselves where and how to browse through and read the books suggested by the teachers, making the learning experience free and dynamic. The reading area can also be used by children together with their parents during the afternoon drop-off.
