CANOSSIANE

Interior desing of a new preschool building in Trento

For the organisation running a newly built nursery school, we were responsible for the bespoke design of the interior furnishings and the design of the outdoor play areas.

This simple and flexible furnishing design emerged from close collaboration with the educational coordination team and the teachers.

In the reception area, characterised by numerous alcoves, there are spaces for small-group activities or workshops, designed to extend the children’s own spaces beyond the classrooms.

Informal seating welcomes adults and children upon their arrival in the morning and return in the afternoon.

The three classrooms share the same basic furniture, arranged differently, and each has been given a special feature: a perforated den, a reading corner and a cosy alcove with sheer curtains and drapes.

Even the more traditional play elements are deliberately ‘unspecific’: to be configured each time according to the wishes and needs of teachers and children. The motif of openwork panels and wooden pegs ‘ties together’ (even physically, acting as a joint!) all the elements of the school.

The colour scheme uses just two bold colours, rendered in a few shades that are repeated only on the resin surfaces in the bathrooms and communal areas.

The other spaces are left white to welcome the colour of the children and their imagination.
